Events

The party went to the Cave of the Fire God in search of the kobolds and their whereabouts, in the hopes of finding their ship, if they had one.

They wandered into the cave, into the uncharted depths, and found themselves in a watery cave. A naga emerged from the cave and cast lightning bolt, felling Medine. With the aid of Circe, Hawk, and Claudis, Epinora attempted to resuscitate Medine, while Caylix fended off waves of naga warriors, and ultimately slew the naga sorceress herself.

Caylix fell to the naga assault, but, when he did so, the orb's power coalesced into draconic form, and began to attack his enemies. Hawk managed to reach Caylix in time to revive him with a potion, and the two continued to fend off the nagas...but it was to no avail. The healers could not save Medine.

The party retreated, covered by the devastating shells of Hawk's hand cannon, and walked through the day and night to return Medine to Koukora. At the temple, they were instructed to lay her in the sacred pool, and await morning.

At the dawn, Medine was bourne to the sea. While Malchor chanted and prayed, Epinora performed a ritual dance, which soon seemed to resonate throughout the open sea. The movements of her staff created waves, which grew more and more massive as the spell's energy intensified. At the climax, the entire bay was filled with a great breaking wave, which collapsed before Medine, showering the beach with spray and obscuring all in mist.

When the mist settled, Medine was alive. An impromptu reunion was held at the nearby Seashells Tavern, as she and the party were exhausted, parched, and famished from their travail.

The following day, Caylix chanced a sighting of a ship; it was not heading for Koukora, but rather skipping the island altogether, using it as a landmark on its way south. Not to let such an opportunity go to waste, Caylix took to the sea, swimming at a dolphin's speed to intercept the ship.

He snuck on board to reconnoiter. The ship appeared to be a pinnace--a tiny ship, barely worthy of the high seas, but perhaps ideal to sail with such a small crew--and appeared to be manned by Verian pirates.

The Verian code states that piracy is justified only under certain, strict conditions:

  • You have a blood feud with the clan owning the ship
  • The ship's captain has dishonored the code, thereby losing its protection
or...
  • You really, really need a ship

Opting for the latter, Caylix assaulted the ship in the way only an 18-strength rogue with a greatsword can. The fight was brief; he and the fire dragon felled all 9 sailors in less than a minute. Then, he had the less-than-admirable task of taking her into port...by himself.

Alarm bells sounded as an obvious pirate ship came into the harbor. The townsfolk were at the ready, armed with fishing spears and crude projectile weapons. The crew seemed conspicuously absent, and absent-minded, as the ship rammed into the docks, ruining much of them.

Soon, it was learned who this ship's captain was, and were her crew had gone.

Hawk and Claudius quickly got to work refurbishing the dilapidated craft, returning her to a serviceable state in impressive time. Knowing the party would soon leave, the townsfolk decided to hold an impromptu feast in their honor--mostly to finish off the last of the dire boar who they'd felled days earlier.

On the following morning, they set out on Varuna's Grace, into a strong tailwind leading them due south, toward where Caylix believed their destination lay.

Epinora, being the only member of the party (besides the captain) with extensive sailing experience, assumed the role of First Mate, and took to the task of making the rest of the landlubbers useful. Hawk proved himself a capable shipwright, and assumed the role of Chief Engineer. What Claudius lacked in sea legs, he made up for in his knowledge of geography and cartography, and was appointed Navigation Officer. Medine's abilities lent her well to the task of lookout. Circe retains the exclusive ability to power the ship when no wind is available, or to redirect and empower that which is.
